Abstract
I will start with an introduction to Qualcomm Research and then move on to discuss a couple of research areas that I am involved in: small cells and context awareness. In addition to industry leading work in third and fourth generation cellular technologies, Qualcomm Research is leading the way towards small cells with research into enabling our vision of 1000x increase in wireless data consumption in 10 years. Today’s smartphone and tablet computing devices are however much more than just wireless data consumers — since these devices are always with you and always-on, we will see the long-awaited vision of an intelligent, omniscient personal assistant realized on the smartphones of tomorrow. At Qualcomm Research we are working on the key attributes of this intelligent platform: always-on, multi-modal, sensing, data fusion and inference.
Biography
Sanjiv Nanda is a vice president of engineering at Qualcomm Research and oversees the Systems Engineering department. He currently leads Qualcomm’s Aware Project, an initiative that will enable the Company’s vision of context-aware personal devices by bringing together research in machine learning and artificial intelligence with advances in resource-efficient implementation. Having contributed to the evolution of mobile and wireless communications for over 20 years, Sanjiv has led a number of key projects since joining Qualcomm, including systems engineering of 3G femtocells, 3G/Wi-Fi integration and IEEE 802.11n. Previously, Sanjiv was employed at Narad Networks where he worked on switched Ethernet backhaul over hybrid fiber coax networks. Before Narad, he was with Bell Laboratories for more than 10 years where he was involved in many aspects of cellular system design, including system architecture, protocol design, system performance and link performance. Sanjiv also worked at Rutgers University’s WINLAB where he conducted post-doctoral research in third-generation wireless information networks. A recipient of the Jack Neubauer Award for best systems paper from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, Sanjiv holds more than 90 US patents and is a Fellow of the IEEE. Sanjiv received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. In addition, he earned Master of Science and PhD in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
