Network Simulation and Emulation in a Testbed Era

Tom Henderson

Abstract

Over the past decade, networking researchers have increasingly favored testbeds of various types to gather experimental data. It is in this context in which we examine the role of network simulation, and the type of network simulator, that fits the priorities of the contemporary network researcher. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the emerging ns-3 network simulator and the Common Open Research Emulator (CORE) and describe how they are being designed to serve as complementary tools alongside physical testbeds and field experiments.

Biography

Thomas R. Henderson is a network researcher and Associate Technical Fellow in the Network Technology division of Boeing’s Research and Technology organization. He also has an appointment as an Affiliate Professor in the Electrical Engineering department at the University of Washington, where he is presently the PI of the NSF-funded ns-3 simulation project. His research at Boeing, sponsoredby the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Boeing internal projects, focuses on problems in operating Internet-based systems in challenging wireless environments. He presently serves as co-chair of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) Host Identity Protocol (HIP) research group and as a member of the Internet Research Steering Group (IRSG).He holds a Ph.D. in EECS from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MSEE and BSEE from Stanford University.
